Incepted last year with a solid debut compilation, Berlin-via-Manchester based imprint INDEX: Records follow up to their inaugural 12″ with a new instalment courtesy of South American-born, Berlin-based producer VASE. Embracing the future “as a cyborg orgy” as they funnily sum up their own endeavour, that ‘Dorsal‘ EP expands the label’s genre-busting investigations, deftly weaving its way through the fringes between atmospheric soundscapes, analogue experiments and ambiguous IDM tropes, with our premiere ‘Aviolet‘ making for an eloquent example of this limitless approach.
The track floats and drifts through some kind of thick nocturnal haze – opaque and shady as can be. As multiple layers subduct and merge elegantly, subtle rhythmic modulations and sustained percussive hits beat a narrowly tailored pulse, heaving the listener out of a syrupy fen of iridescent colours and lavishly textured pads into an intricately-interfolded world of harmonic shadows and post-industrial gloom. With this richly nuanced EP, VASE delivers a record both compelling at first listen and still as deep and durably riveting over the hundredth. Top notch material.
Dorsal EP is released via INDEX: Records on 27th July, pre-order a copy from Bandcamp.
