The electro-ambient trio Yayoba aptly describe their sound as “like a beam of light passing through translucent glass walls in a labyrinth.” Their debut ‘A Maze of Glass’ cut an elusive, shape-shifting figure consisting of deep synth meditations, fourth world symphonics, and cacophonous sound collages.
Before joining forces, Paul Wilson, Jani Hirvonen, and Johannes Schebler have logged countless years in the experimental electro-acoustic realms under solo guises and with groups (Hirvonen and Schebler collaborate in Grykë Pyje). Amongst the Not Not Fun roster, Yayoba operates along similar wavelengths as the Japanese ambient quartet unknown me.
The latter convey an aesthetic of carefully composed yet loose tunes suited for simulation skyscraper spas and futurist built environments. Yayoba, on the other hand, craft scruffy electronic suites attuned to feverish full moon energies, moss-strewn pathways, and uncharted topography.
With their latest, ‘Matkat’, out in October through Not Not Fun, Yayoba further refine their sonic journeys, with “Transparent Waves” a dizzying standout. Composed of layers of burbling and shimmering synths rolled on top of one another, “Transparent Waves” congeals into celestial sound divinations dialed into late night frequencies.
