On 21st October Manchester-based producer Tom Burford aka Contours will return with his second solo instalment and first delivery for Bristolian label Shall Not Fade. The excellent ‘Loose Wood‘ EP features three originals and a remix from in-demand new talent Ross From Friends.
Of all the artists who emerged on Bradley Zero’s ever proactive Rhythm Section, Contours is certainly one that made quite the impression on us. Drummer by trade, the Manchester-based producer sculpts enthralling pieces of jacuzzi-warm house tinged with a hint of smokey jazz flavours.
Last year, Tom gave us a bit of insight on his modus operandi: “I’ll jam on ideas using bits of hand percussion or the kit then start programming drum patterns and layering them up with these live percussive ideas to give it texture and a warm live feel“. A striking live jam feel that juices up the fashionable chill-house quality of his tunes.
Our pick, the A2 ‘Quarkabeb‘ encapsulates the most harmonious traits of Contours’ fragile house music. Propelled by a lush battery of percussions – woodblock, bells, kit, shakers – the track turns from a spacey piano-based tune into a splendid string-laden groover as the bass takes over its second half. Janus-faced healer.
Loose Wood EP is released via Shall Not Fade on 21st October 2016, pre-order a vinyl copy from Bandcamp.
