Across its decade and a half existence, California’s 100% Silk has specialised in a potent brand of liquid house and after hours techno to prime the sound system between the small hours and the first cracks of dawn. Having expanded beyond their initial collective of California based producers, their reach has brought in folks from Japan, Malta, Columbia, and the UK, to name just a few, who all bring a unique production aesthetic to contemporary electronica.
On ‘Say It’, his first release with Silk, Lithuania’s Cport Cistema (Simonas Činga) brought moonlit club breaks and strands of bass music to the label’s portfolio. If it flew under your radar at the time, its heady atmosphere stands strong three years later. It’s worth a revisit as we await the release of Cport’s latest, ‘Body Needs’, arriving in October via 100% Silk. Infused with propulsive rhythms, chopped vocals, and dreamy synths, it adds elements of drum n bass and ambient to further refine Činga’s production palette while refining the tone set on ‘Say It’.
With “pushpull”, the breaks are crisp, the vocals sliced and diced into oblivion, and the energy contains an unfettered sense of joy. Arriving after the ambient interlude “3-20”, the track offers a beautiful synthesis of melancholic garage, breakbeat, and underground balearic. “pushpull” feels like the final moments of a night out reverberating as the night bus approaches and dawn breaks on the horizon.
Body Needs is scheduled for release 2 October via 100% Silk. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
