Best known for his releases across Clone’s house imprint Royal Oak, R&S, and Ninja Tune, Jack Hamill has been turning his attention to his own Tiraquon imprint in recent times. In 2022, a compilation was released, pulling together his works to date. This, his fifth release on the imprint, shows a real shift in intent.
Space Dimension Controller is well-known for lush, synth-drenched productions, sometimes funky, sometimes dreamy, which makes our premiere of ‘Big Shoe NRG‘ and the EP as a whole all the more surprising.
Reminiscent of the post-dubstep early days of the 2000s, which saw bass and funk join forces with the ever-welcoming haven of house tempos and structures, its forte is tumbling, syncopated stabs that aim to poke you in all the appropriate motivational fleshy bits.
While almost quite unlike Space Dimension Controller’s usual motif, the faintest drift of synth adds just a touch of softness, joining the dots. If you haven’t paid attention to the wares of Tiraquon to date, perhaps this is an interesting point to get started.
‘TQN005’ is scheduled for release on 14 April via Tiraquon Recordings. Order a copy.
