Anno, the New York based label helmed by Hank Jackson, is back with its third release. ‘Anno003‘ is a live record, a rare but welcome occurrence in today’s electronic music landscape. These three tracks are taken from a 2017 New Year’s morning performance by Funky Doodle, a one-off collaboration between James K, Draveng, and DJ Richard, at a small house somewhere in the rural Canadian town of Yellowknife. Despite the intentionally cheeky name, the music is anything but and captures an especially intimate ambient set from three masters of moody electronics.
The tracks are all untitled but quite distinct. The A side swells up from out of a damp haze. Abrasive echoes swirl around like drafts of cold air sneaking through the poorly insulated walls. Gurgling sounds signal infrastructural decay; a leaky pipe in the corner of the room drips into a bucket that has to be emptied out in between sets.
Over on the B side things get weirder. Menacing pulses and uncanny atmospherics congeal over a bed of drones. Something truly sinister is in the air. A sonar-like synth rings out into the darkness possibly confusing the local bat population. Icy textures resonate until they shatter into white noise.
The final track is short but effective. Two piano chords ring out as the sun creeps up refracting off the snow in all directions. A sporadic synth line squeaks like rodents scurrying around under the termite chewed floorboards, eventually fading out as a few final chord hits advance into the foreground and resolve. Happy new year, time for bed.
