Music Video: Nathan Micay – First Casualty

The latest salvo from Nic Tasker’s ever-reliable Whities camp arrived this July in the guise of a two-track 12″ from Canadian producer Bwana. The first release to be shared under his given name, Micay described “Whities 017” as an “exercise in self-therapy” – bubbling over with an effervescent synth lines, it frames melodic earworms and an insistent motorik beat in emotive chords that imbue the track with a wistful sense of hope. Acting as a “battle cry for the club”, it pulsates with a glistening optimism that’s a soothing balm in our troubled times.

Today the label have shared a video for that release’s A side, ‘First Casualty‘. Directed by Masha Batsea & Alex McCullough, the video winds its way along an anonymous tree-lined road, overlaying the neutral landscape with incongruous shapes and colours. These figures grow and develop as the weirdness amplifies, evolving into shimmering abstract forms and what looks like a rotating Squares bar.  Undeniably original, it’s a brilliantly disorienting watch that’s left us a little stumped – if you think you can figure out the meaning behind this one, let us know.

‘Whities 017’ is scheduled for release 3 August 2018 via Whities. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
