Hunter P. Thompson returns to his Akasha System project for his latest album, ‘Heliocene’, arriving in September via California’s 100% Silk.
Previously based in Portland, Oregon, Thompson’s output as Akasha System reflected the natural surroundings embedded in his former home. Now operating out of Florida, ‘Heliocene’ is his first album since 2023’s ‘Phytopia‘, after spending the last two years exploring the Everglade dub ambient of Tegu. According to the label, ‘Heliocene’ is “inspired by explorations of the many sanctuaries hidden in Florida’s ragged paradise”.
Among the highlights is “Purity Vector”, a shimmering slice of boundless synths hanging over breathy percussion. The sound is unmistakably Akasha System but the cloudy temperate rainforest is replaced with a sunnier sheen that evokes humid midday walks along Gulf beaches.
‘Heliocene’ is scheduled for release on 5th September via 100% Silk. Order a copy from Bandcamp.
