Phonetics Lisboa 2022

Taking place between 8 – 11 September 2022, the third edition of experimental music festival Phonetics materialises across various venues in Lisbon with performances from Photonz, Ziúr, DJ Lycox, Tiago b2b Zaltan, Riccardo La Foresta, Berangère Maximin, Terrine and many more.

First launched in Algiers in 2019, Phonetics is a two-part music festival and artist residency aimed to explore sound experimentation and cross-genres music exploration by creating unique connections between artists, listeners and the environment, by making the plurality of languages heard.

For the occasion, Phonetics team up with Lisbon-based collective Filho Único, acclaimed for their affiliation with Portuguese label Príncipe, responsible for developing innovative strategies in Europe for international luminaries such as Ariel Pink, James Ferraro, Linn da Quebrada and Hype Williams.

As part of the 2022 French-Portuguese cultural season, this year’s edition of Phonetics will see an impressive array of Portuguese and French artists coming together for a two-week residency at Mono Lisboa from August 28 – September 8 to create four commissioned performances and back-to-back performances to debut at Phonetics festival.

During the residency at Mono Lisboa, artists NSDOS (FR), Lucas Gutierrez (AR), DJ Lycox (PT), Lula Pena (PT), Riccardo La Foresta (IT), Photonz (PT), Keumel (FR), Epsilove (FR), Berangère Maximin (FR), Carincur (PT), Herlander (PT), Clothilde (PT), and Terrine (FR) will gather to develop the performances, which will be presented during the festival from September 8th to September 11th.

Additionally, Phonetics resident, ethnomusicologist, PhD candidate and field-recording artist Romain Mascagni (aka Territoires) will collaborate with 12 students from Saint-Denis (Phonetics’ hometown). After a series of workshops revolving around sound art, they will fly to Lisbon in order to record and re-orchestrate a sound piece focused on Lisbon’s Tagus River. The project received support from the Erasmus+ program.
