Berlin Atonal 2016

Berlin Atonal is a Pandora’s box, bringing forth a wide array of expectations before it was even open. We were fortunate enough to attend the festival in Berlin Mitte and witness at first hand cutting-edge performances. Here’s our day-by-day report.

Motion Graphics: Avoiding Sentimentality and Nostalgia

Following the release of Motion Graphics debut self-titled album via Domino Records we caught up with the NYC based producer over Skype to discover more about his album writing process and how day-to-day technology interface sounds, device notifications and even the sound of household appliances have helped shape his album.

Dan Hayhurst: Critter Party

Where Sculpture come across as a kaleidoscopic exaggeration of our media saturated milieu: audio collage, noise and sleek techno built into a strange overdriven universe, Critter Party latches onto the human at the centre of it.

Premiere: Hidden Turn – How To

Hidden Turn’s first incursion on Doc Scott’s 31 Recordings came two years ago with the release of ‘Big Dirty’ – Today we are glad to present the transcending ‘How To’, a deep spiralling cut built around a forcible broken-beat backbone, as dubbed-out synth whirls, riffling organic echoes and wailing distorted layers keep swashing in suspended motion.

Dekmantel 2016

We certainly had high expectations when stepping in the deliciously green setting of Amsterdamse Bos for the very first time. The planets aligned for a perfect weekend of partying at Dekmantel: a chilled vibe and the opulent nature immediately absorbing us into their friendly arms, plus the cream of the crop of contemporary electronic music. Here is our remembrance from these intense four-days of raving in the woods.

Essential Guide: Berlin Atonal 2016

Split between Kraftwerk, Tresor and OHM, Berlin Atonal is without a doubt one of the most eagerly awaited events in Berlin thanks to its forward-thinking lineup and mouthwatering series of one-off live sets and epic world premieres. Here’s a shortlist of the performances which we look very much forward to.

Lanark Artefax: Abstract Spaces

As his stunning debut EP’s just been released via Lee Gamble’s UIQ label, we caught up with Lanark Artefax to discuss the concepts of presence and disintegration, emotions in music, his first connection with UIQ and the importance of musical theory on his work.

Midgar Records

As Midgar Records transitions from fledgling newcomer into a keenly anticipated name in the techno scene, we interviewed label founder Jacopo to open up about his label and to record this mix showcasing the label’s overcast aesthetics.

Premiere: Nebulo – Rules

Following on from the first episode of his ‘Safari Suites’ released last year via Parisian label Odd Frequencies, Nebulo steps up with the second volume of his heavy-battered jungle trek on the boundary-pushing Seagrave, bursting the frontiers between brain music and intuitive body language through eight cuts of dense, archaic techno outbursts.
